Created in 2017, the monthly event was intended as a one-off safer space, but quickly amassed a community of queer and femme partygoers, drag and burlesque performers and DJs. The events frequently have a performance part, with a slew of local drag, burlesque and vogue performers taking center stage. A queer, POC and femme booking policy ensures that only the underrepresented communities have their time to shine during Ciężki Brokat nights and the safer space rules in place benefit not only the community but also allies frequenting the night.

The seven pieces received their world premieres in Glasgow on Saturday 27 May 2023, and are now being recorded by the ensemble for release in 2024.

The aim of this project is to create an open, honest and encouraging big band setting where these groups are comfortable to get involved. The band is open to women, trans, non-binary and gender fluid musicians and will comprise of a full rhythm section, 4 trumpets, 5 saxes, 4 trombones and vocalists. They will be playing a wide range of jazz, funk, soul and pop that is bound to have you moving your hips and singing along.

So, during the summer before the pandemic, the Madrid natives decided to organise their first event. They called it Karne and it was the origin of Karne Kulture, a collective committed to creating safer and more diverse spaces in the Madrid nightlife.

Keychange consists of partners collaborating from 12 different countries, working proactively to make this change. The music association Fritz’s Corner wants to help young women take control of music. The goal is more women in the creative positions in the music industry. In the fall of 2012, the association Fritz’s Corner will start its mentorship program Power over music. The program is aimed at young women who want to become managers, agents or artist and repertoire managers, positions where women are underrepresented in today’s music life. The mentoring program brings together mentees who are at the beginning of their careers with mentors who have several years of experience in the music world and an interest in gender equality work. The idea is that the younger participants will be able to share in the experience and knowledge of older colleagues about the music industry, that they will have access to a new network as well as methods and tools to break unequal structures in the industry.

While Tina was interviewing Jelly for an article about the queer jazz scene, they both came to the conclusion that, while there wasn’t much of an existing queer jazz scene at the moment, they should definitely do something about it. They also noticed how queer jazz musicians had historically been written out of their place in jazz, and young jazz musicians had no queer icons who they could look up to or spaces their identities were welcomed or honoured. So, Queer Jazz was launched in Pride of 2023 with a gig mini-series highlighting amazing queer jazz musicians and fostering a space for a queer jazz scene to emerge. They have since worked with partners including London Jazz Festival and Brick Lane Jazz Festival, been featured in Clash Magazine, Jazzwise and Jazz FM, and amassed a growing following.

Festival Republic is relaunching ReBalance this year, an initiative providing opportunities to women and gender-expansive artists throughout the UK, both on stage and in the studio. Each artist will be receiving five days of studio time to record, mix and complete a project. They will each be paired with a chosen producer and will also have access to mentorship and educational days with industry leaders in London and Manchester. This will culminate in a showcase at the end of the year, with each artist also receiving a guaranteed slot at a Festival Republic event in 2025. Each recording session will be led and/or assisted by a woman or gender-expansive professional.
